Job Description
District School Nurse (RN Associate or RN BSN Required)
The District School Nurse supports the health and wellness of students, staff, and the school community. Responsibilities include providing skilled nursing care, administering medications, maintaining health records, ensuring compliance with immunization and health regulations, and promoting a safe and healthy school environment. The nurse operates under the supervision of the site administrator and the Director of Special Education, following accepted nursing practices, policies, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide skilled nursing services in accordance with accepted practices and district policies
- Assess, treat, and manage student illness and injuries; make referrals as needed
- Administer medications and specialized treatments; oversee administration by trained personnel
- Perform health screenings and assessments as required
- Develop, implement, and annually review Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs)
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes of nursing interventions
- Assist with emergency care decisions for students and staff
- Transport students (e.g., via wheelchair) when appropriate
- Maintain accurate, confidential student health and immunization records
- Document all health services provided
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA standards, and other regulations
- Maintain systems for health record storage and retrieval
- Submit Medicaid documentation and logs as required
- Train and supervise health assistants and unlicensed personnel
- Delegate nursing tasks appropriately and ensure completion
- Monitor documentation, screenings, medication administration, and reporting
- Serve as a member of the School Nurse Advisory Council (SNAC)
- Collaborate with administrators on student health and safety matters
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe health office environment
- Manage inventory, equipment, and supplies
- Order health supplies through the Lead Nurse
- Schedule appointments with medical consultants as needed
- Conduct monthly district health office meetings
- Build and maintain professional relationships with students, staff, and families
- Communicate effectively in person and via phone
- Assist with health education initiatives (materials, displays, etc.)
- Work collaboratively with Medicaid services when needed
- Support district health-related initiatives as assigned
- Complete additional duties as directed by supervisors or administration
- Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and sound judgment
- Manage time effectively and work independently
Qualifications
- High School Diploma (required)
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Ability to pass a background check
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds
- Manual dexterity and full use of hands/fingers
- May require moving light furniture
