Security & deployment

The gate must keep working when the site does not. Terminals hold a local cache of induction and authorisation data so verification continues through a power or network interruption, which on an early-stage site is a weekly condition rather than an incident. Overrides are available to the HSE officer and the site manager, and each is recorded with the name of the person who authorised it — because a site will always face the inspector arriving unannounced or the emergency contractor at 2am, and an unrecorded override is the same weakness as no gate at all. Equipment is specified to be relocated as the site develops, since gates move several times during a project.

Data privacy

Site access data is workforce and visitor personal data: identity documents, presence times, movement between zones. It should be collected for safety and access purposes and used for those purposes, with the boundary stated explicitly. Where presence data is also used for payroll or productivity — which is a legitimate use on many projects — that should be declared to the people it concerns rather than discovered by them.

Two specifics matter here. Identity documents belonging to visitors and drivers should be verified and reduced to an attribute rather than retained as scans in a gate office, which is a common and unnecessary practice. Two conditions shape site access here. The first is heat: from mid-June to mid-September a midday break is mandated under UAE labour rules, which reshapes the working day into two shifts and produces two arrival peaks rather than one. Gate capacity, shading and queue design have to reflect that, and a system that creates a queue in direct sun at 15:00 will be bypassed by the second week.

The second is the visitor population. UAE projects run with a dense layer of client representatives, engineering consultants, authority inspectors and specialist subcontractors, alongside a daily flow of people arriving at the gate seeking work — a reality that generic visitor systems do not model and that needs a defined, respectful process rather than an improvised one.
